What's the

That’s the question that led me to start Kahawai Content Company.

The realization

Can I freelance forever? Yes, but no.

I have no problem bringing in business. I’m fortunate to have reached a point where I have a strong presence, portfolio, skill set, and referral base.

I can be a freelancer for the rest of my working life. Absolutely. But I have this tick that makes me always want more.

As a freelancer, you can’t always take more. There are only so many hours in a day. It’s also not realistic or financially responsible to expect to thrive 10, 20, and 30 years from now doing the same work, the same way as today.

The startup

Roopa Bhopale and I have been working as a copywriter-designer duo for like, over a decade. I came up with the name and theme of Kahawai and we wrote the business plan, true startup-style, on a whiteboard at a coworking space in Brooklyn, NY.

We wanted to start an agency that made content marketing feel less strenuous for clients and creatives alike. I wrote all the copy and she did all the design work. It was a simple process that got great results.

The growth

As Kahawai became more established, we started to get more clients, including some larger ones. We needed someone to run the business while we delivered the content and creative.

I had met Josh Irvine while he was working and I was freelancing for an agency in San Diego, and always had in the back of my mind that he seemed like someone I wanted to work with more. I had no idea whether he would be interested in joining Kahawai but pitched him the idea over beers, and we eventually became business partners.

Kahawai now has a team of outsourced writers, designers, developers, and marketers fulfilling work daily for about a dozen clients and counting. We intend and expect to keep growing.

The purpose

For me personally, it’s gratifying to own a marketing company that generally makes and keeps everyone happy. It’s of course also exhilarating to grow a business and confidence-boosting to be a CEO, but I try not to get too caught up in all that. I just want to do good work, with and for good people, so I can lead a meaningful life and enable others to do the same.
